Riverside County is a participating community in the
National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)
. Participation in the NFIP makes residents of the unincorporated parts of Riverside County eligible to purchase flood insurance. In order to participate in the NFIP and therefore make the purchase of flood insurance available to citizens of the county, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires the county to adopt a floodplain management ordinance. The intent of the ordinance is to 1) ensure that any new construction and/or substantial improvement within a mapped floodplain is done in a manner that reduces damage to the public and property 2) discourage any new development within floodways. The District is designated to administer the program in the western parts of the county. The
Coachella Valley Water District
(CVWD) is designated to administer this program in most of the eastern parts of the county.
The Floodplain Management Section of the District is responsible for the implementation of the County's Floodplain Management regulation and portions of the NFIP regulations. As a result the FPM section reviews Separate Applications (
Floodplain Management Review Cases
), requests and/or reviews CLOMRs and LOMRs, provides
information and actively reviews and/or performs floodplain mapping or studies.
